Introduction
Currently, the violence and atrocities against the minority Hindus in Bangladesh have intensified along the India-Bangladesh border. Despite the formation of a new government, the violence continues unabated. In such a situation, the minority communities are openly protesting and requesting entry into India at the border.
What is BSF?
The Border Security Force (BSF) is one of India’s four border patrol forces. Established on December 1, 1965, BSF was created to ensure the security of India’s borders. This force protects India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Role of BSF
The primary role of BSF is to guard the borders and tackle issues like infiltration attempts, smuggling of arms and narcotics, and illegal immigration. BSF is deployed in Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, West Bengal, and Assam.
Powers of BSF
BSF has special powers to arrest and interrogate any individual. This authority extends up to 50 kilometers inside the borders of Punjab, West Bengal, and Assam.
Bangladeshi Hindus and the Role of BSF
Following the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government in Bangladesh, radical Muslims have launched attacks on minority Hindus. These attacks have resulted in the deaths of many innocent Hindus, and many have sought refuge in India to save their lives. The Hindus arriving at the Indian border are requesting entry permission with the help of BSF.
Steps Taken by Prime Minister Modi
To handle this crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has formed a committee to monitor the situation in Bangladesh. The ADG of BSF’s Eastern Command has been appointed as the head of this committee.
Conclusion
The atrocities against the minority Hindus in Bangladesh and the ensuing situation at the border highlight the significant role of BSF. The proactive role of BSF and the steps taken by Prime Minister Modi can help control the situation and provide security to the minority Hindus.
