Underwater Dwarka: India’s Newest Tourism Adventure Set to Launch
In a groundbreaking move for Indian tourism, the ancient submerged city of Dwarka will soon be open to visitors for the first time. This incredible opportunity will allow tourists to explore the underwater marvels of this sacred city, believed to have been the kingdom of Lord Krishna.
The Gujarat Tourism Department is set to unveil an underwater tourism adventure in Dwarka during this year’s Diwali festival. This innovative experience will give visitors a chance to witness the submerged remains of the city from the safety of a submarine, diving beneath the waters of the Gomti River.
Dwarka holds a special place in Hindu mythology and is revered as one of the most sacred cities. According to ancient scriptures like the Mahabharata and Puranas, Dwarka was established by Lord Krishna himself and served as his kingdom. This city is considered one of the seven most ancient cities of India, known as the Sapta Puri.
Marine archaeologists have made significant discoveries in Dwarka, including pottery and various artifacts that indicate a thriving maritime culture in ancient times. Despite numerous attempts by researchers over the years to unravel the mysteries of Dwarka, much remains unknown. The city’s underwater ruins continue to captivate historians, archaeologists, and spiritual seekers alike.
The first excavation of Dwarka was carried out in 1963 by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in collaboration with Deccan College, Pune. During this period, archaeologists discovered pottery estimated to be around 3,000 years old. Nearly a decade later, ASI’s Underwater Archaeology Wing uncovered copper coins and granite structures beneath the sea, further cementing Dwarka’s historical significance.
With the launch of the submarine tourism adventure, India is opening a new chapter in its tourism sector, offering an unparalleled blend of history, spirituality, and adventure. This initiative is expected to attract both domestic and international tourists, eager to explore the fabled city of Dwarka and experience its rich cultural heritage from an entirely new perspective.
